Common Name: Contortionist, Asiatic Val, Corkscrew Jungle Val, Eel Grass
Average Mature Size: 12-20 inches
Recommended Light: Medium to High
As a variant of the Americana species, this Val can get pretty giant, which makes it perfect for aquascapers with huge tanks to fill. Generally these plants are placed in the background or along the sides of the aquarium.
Vallisneria plants are low maintenance, easy to grow and propagate, and have fairly low nutrient requirements as far as fast growing plants go. They are a great starter plant for beginner aquarists because of this, and their ability to grow in a variety of water parameters and temperatures. Val plants routinely send out long strings called runners that develop plantlets (baby plants with their own root systems). To propagate your val, all you need to do is pop the plantlet off the mother either by hand or with scissors, and put it directly into the soil.
