It is quick growing and needs frequent pruning to ensure that the lower leaves still receive plenty of light and prevent shedding. You should start trimming when stems reach about 4 inches long if you want to cultivate a bushier appearance.

 While it can grow in many substrates (even floating!), this rotala prefers finer grain size gravel and sand, and loves nutrient dense soils. When using inert substrates, make sure to supplement with root tabs and liquid iron to keep your plant growing happily! Rotala is very easy to propagate by replanting trimmings directly into the soil.
