The Amazon sword is the most common species of Echinodorus in the aquarium trade, and for good reason. It is a dense rosette plant that grows large, broad green leaves. They are often used as background plants or centerpiece plants due to their large size. Many fish prefer these swords to lay their eggs on, and the canopy they create can protect vulnerable fry.
All species of Echinodorus are heavy root feeders, and therefore require a nutrient rich substrate that is often supplemented with root tabs in order to support their growth. They develop expansive root systems as well, so deep substrate is a must, at least two or more inches.
