While African Water Ferns may have a delicate and intricate appearance, they are surprisingly durable and dense plants. It is slower growing and can reach large sizes over time, making it good for midgrounds and backgrounds. Vibrant and semitransparent leaves grow out of long, thin, and tangly rhizomes. Bolbitis Heudelotii is adaptable to a large variety of substrates from bare-bottom to sand. Their rhizomes are prone to rot when planted directly into the substrate, though, so the easiest course of action is to just drop the plant wherever you want it to root, and pin it down lightly with hardscape until it roots. Alternatively, you can also tie it loosely to hardscape with thread temporarily while the roots develop and it eventually will anchor itself.
These plants are often found growing in rivers, and seem to prefer faster water flow, as well as slightly acidic water (5-7 pH). Alkaline and hard water can cause black discoloration and decay on the plant leaves. This plant can be propagated easily, and sometimes does it on its own by detaching portions of the rhizome naturally. You can cut the rhizome anywhere, as long as cuttings have at least 3 leaflets present. While this plant can be grown emersed, it is generally found growing submerged in nature, and produces healthier foliage when grown as such.
