Common Name: Asian Water Fern, El Nino Fern
Average Mature Size: 3 to 6 inches submersed, up to 1 foot emersed
Recommended Light: Low to Medium
The Asian Water Fern is a quirky plant, typically found growing terrestrially in nature, but still able to be grown fully submersed as well. Emersed growth appears as frilly, frond-like leaves, while submersed growth are long, thin, ovate leaves that come to a distinct point.
Bolbitis Heteroclita is a rhizomatous plant with thin stringy roots. It grows best on a rocky substrate or fixed to hard scape. Heavy fertilization is not necessary. It is important to keep a consistent temperature between 72-78 degrees for this plant to grow properly, as it is very sensitive to fluctuations. It is best to keep it in slightly acidic and soft water (6-7 pH).
While growing Asian Water Fern completely submersed can be tricky, they are much easier to grow in a partially emergent environment, making them great for paludariums. If you do decide to keep it submerged though, the slow growth rate and smaller size can make them a great foreground or midground plant, and can be particularly good for a nano tank setup.
